Royal Opening 2009
By Guy Martin
November 13, 2009
THE 50th anniversary of Box Hill School and the opening of its brand new music facilities were marked by a visit from the Duke of Edinburgh on Thursday.
Prince Philip toured the new music school, took time to talk to pupils and staff and listened to the choir singing Hallelujah by Leonard Cohen in the recital room.
The Duke also listened to a presentation by pupils of Box Hill and Jubilee High School in Addlestone.
They spoke about their recent community work on a visit to South Africa, when several classrooms were completed. They will be used by the community as an adult literacy centre during the day and a homework club for students in the evening.
Unveiling a plaque to mark his visit, the Duke made a speech during which he commented that he had just been introduced to Jamie Sharpley, one of the school governors who at the time of a previous visit in 1964 had still been a pupil.
He met a group of six silver award winners, and 19 gold candidates, for his Duke of Edinburgh’s Award scheme. The pupils involved in the scheme also gave a demonstration on the school’s low ropes course.
Dignitaries who attended the event included Geoffrey Marlow, chairman of Surrey County Council, and Councillor Tim Hall, chairman of Mole Valley District Council.
Louise McComish-Owen, daughter of Roy McComish, the first headmaster of the school, was also present.
Mark Eagers, head teacher of the school in Mickleham, said: “This has been a great day for Box Hill School.
“We are hugely grateful to His Royal Highness for marking our jubilee year with his visit and for opening our impressive new music school.
“This facility will benefit both current students and those who will join us in the future, enhancing further the school’s growing musical reputation.”
